A UN report released in April this year indicates that Female genital mutilation is strongly anchored in the customs and traditions of 29 African countries. Globally, an estimated 130-140 million girls and women have undergone some form of female genital mutilation. In the small West African nation of Gambia, the practice is rampant despite the health complications.

International Journalism trainers Judy Aslett and Steve Holloway spent some time in the Gambia and tell the story of one girl’s fight to see the practice outlawed.
